Listen: Carer calls 999 after finding widow's body

A woman who found a pensioner dead in a bungalow told a 999 operator she thought the 86-year-old had set herself alight.

A carer, who had been visiting one of Una Crown's neighbours, went into her bungalow using a spare key after smelling burning in January 2013.

Her 999 call was played to jurors at the murder trial of David Newton, 70, who lived near Mrs Crown. He was charged in 2024 after new DNA evidence emerged and convicted of murder following a trial.

She is heard telling an operator "something weird" had happened after spotting "burnt cinders". "I think she's actually set herself alight," she said.

Audio of the 999 call was released following a challenge in court by the BBC.
