Watch rocket blast off to launch new space centre
A small rocket has been launched to mark the opening of a space centre that aims to inspire the next generation of Welsh astronauts.
The Snowdonia Space Centre, in Llanbedr, Gwynedd, will provide testing facilities for the development of new products and technologies in the space industry.
In a joint venture between Snowdonia Aerospace Centre and Newton Launch Systems, the new centre was launched with a high-altitude balloon and live rocket demonstration on Thursday.
Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant said it will boost north Wales' economy, "inspire the next generation" and will "strengthen Britain's position as a space superpower".
Backed by more than £1.3m in funding, including £820,000 from the UK Space Agency, the centre is designed to boost the local economy and STEM education while advancing space technology for universities, start ups, and industry.
It includes a flight test range, rocket engine test stand, launch rails and high-tech labs.
Welsh government secretary for economy, energy and planning, Rebecca Evans, said: "This is a landmark moment not only for the only local community – bringing new opportunities, skills and investment to the region – but also for the wider UK space sector."
Jeremy Howitt, from the Snowdonia Space Centre, said it aims to give early flight test access to developers while inspiring "more young people to engage in a career in the space industry".
Matt Archer, from Launch, UK Space Agency, said the new centre is a "significant step" for UK space, offering vital facilities for developing and testing space technology.
