Man who stabbed walker in the head, jailed

A man who stabbed an early morning walker in his leg, arm and head before attacking another man has been jailed for six years and six months.

Inam Qureshi, 45, of no fixed address, approached his first victim from behind at about 06:40 BST on 28 July in Bright Street, Peterborough.

As he made his way to Cathedral Square, he threw a hot drink on his second victim, chasing him and punching him to the ground, Cambridgeshire Police said.

Qureshi pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault by beating at Peterborough Crown Court on Friday.

CCTV caught Qureshi walking away from his first victim and dumping his weapon in a bush near Deacon Street - it was later found by a police dog.

The victim, who was in his 50s and not known to his attacker, was able to call for an ambulance and police began a search of the area.

Armed police officers detained Qureshi as he left a shop in Lincoln Road.

Det Con Maisy Napier said: "These were extremely concerning incidents with unprovoked attacks on members of the public that have had devastating effects on the victims and the wider community, especially for the first victim who suffered multiple stab wounds and is still suffering with the psychological effects of the attack."

She added Qureshi's behaviour was "completely unacceptable, and I am pleased this has been reflected in the sentence handed out by the judge".
