Duck dies after being 'attacked' in city park

A duck has died and two have been taken to an animal hospital following a reported attack at a park in Hull.

Witnesses contacted Hull Wildlife Protectors on 11 January at 23:45 GMT to report a group of boys throwing sticks and stones at the animals in Peter Pan Park.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service retrieved the ducks from a frozen lake the following day at about 10:30 GMT, and they were taken in by Ren's Wildlife Hospital.

Charlotte Smith, of Hull Wildlife Protectors, said: "It is heart-breaking and so sad. The birds' wings were clipped and they wouldn't have been able to get away."

The charity said one surviving duck suffered a neck wound and the other had respiratory issues

The wildlife group said the witnesses confronted the group of boys and put the ducks back on to the lake to prevent them from further attack.

"Why is is acceptable to harm animals? It is cruel and unnecessary," Ms Smith said.

The two surviving ducks are said to recovering well.
