A man has been killed in a crash which resulted in the M1 in Leicestershire being closed for a number of hours.

Police said officers received a call at 04:40 GMT on Sunday about a collision on the southbound carriageway near to junction 22, which involved a white VW Golf and a Leyland DAF HGV.

The driver of the Golf was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, but no more details have been released.

The northbound carriageway was reopened during Sunday morning but the southbound side remained shut until shortly after 18:00.

The driver of HGV did not sustain any physical injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been discharged, officers said.

No arrests have been made.

Detectives have begun an investigation and want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it.
