A councillor has called "mindless" vandalism to part of a children's play park in Lincolnshire "unacceptable" as it will cost £7,270 to repair.

Railings and their connected concrete footings were pulled out from the ground from the Air Rider in Kingston Gardens, off Chelmsford Avenue, Grimsby, on 2 July.

The basket swing at the park was also removed after it was damaged from dogs biting the rubber and repairs would be needed to the floor after it was ripped up.

Ron Shepherd, from North East Lincolnshire Council, said the equipment at the park has been target before, with the chains and platform connected to the Air Rider being stolen last year.

'Mindless vandalism'

He said: "All our parks are a source of fun and entertainment for the children of this borough and the small minority are ruining it for those people.

"This is not acceptable. These incidents are nothing but acts of mindless vandalism.

"Whilst the green space may remain, the very reason people visit these places are being removed through no fault of their own."

The cost of the repairs will cover removing and installing two new picnic benches, the basket swing being replaced, flooring repairs, replacing the stolen equipment, and also the cost of removing and cleaning the area.

Mr Shepherd added that anyone with any information is asked to get in touch with police.

The BBC has contacted Humberside Police for more information.
