A man has been charged with murder after a stabbing in a West Sussex town.

Metodi Petrov Ivanov, 20, was attacked near the pier on The Esplanade in Bognor Regis at about 21:40 BST on Friday, Sussex Police said.

Mr Ivanov, who lived in the town, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but died from his injuries in the early hours of Saturday.

Andrii Uzhyk, 31, from Bognor Regis, appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, charged with murder, two counts of possession of a bladed article and two counts of criminal damage. He remains in police custody.

Tributes were paid to Mr Ivanov by his family.

"We are devastated at the loss of our beloved Metodi," said his next of kin in a statement released by Sussex Police.

"He was a good, kind boy who had a bright future ahead of him.

"He was good to everyone and liked by people of all nationalities, and he was particularly caring with all of his nieces, nephews and family.

"We cannot believe what has happened and Metodi will be dearly missed by all who knew him."

Police said officers would increase their presence in the area and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

"Our focus remains on establishing exactly how and why this tragic incident occurred," said Supt Imran Asghar.

"We are committed to seeking justice for Metodi's family and friends."

Mr Uzhyk will next appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on Thursday.
