Arizona lawmakers spar as 1864 abortion law repealed

Arizona's Senate has voted to repeal a 1864 law banning abortion. The law was resurrected in April by the state's supreme court, unleashing an outcry across the country.

A bill to repeal the law was narrowly passed in the State House last week before making it to the Senate. State senators sparred over the law, as two Republicans broke ranks to join Democrats in repealing the bill.

Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, hailed the result and is due to formalise the removal of the law.
