Frank Tolley: 'We did what we had to do'

Frank Tolley signed up to the Royal Airforce when he was 19 years old.

He flew many missions during the war, to help his crew target their bombs over Germany.

He also conducted humanitarian missions where planes dropped food parcels to civilians.

Frank is now 103 and is one of the oldest surviving bombers from World War Two.

He writes poetry about his life and his experience as a bomb aimer.

We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.

The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
