Unusual police chase with wheelchair goes viral

Onlookers were left "baffled" after witnessing an unusual police pursuit in Sheffield.

A police car was seen attempting to pull over a woman using a three-wheeled motorised wheelchair on Weedon Street near the Meadowhall shopping centre on 26 January.

Video of the incident, which shows a woman evading the police car twice, has been seen more than five million times online.

South Yorkshire Police said a 33-year-old woman had admitted stealing goods and would be dealt with by way of an out-of-court disposal.

Zindin Bekhouche, a 24-year-old law student who recorded the incident, said: "I was at work when I heard sirens and shouting.

"I then saw this ridiculous chase happening and decided to record as I didn't think anyone would believe me unless it was on video.

"I was left absolutely baffled."

Police said officers had received a report of shoplifting at Meadowhall on 26 January at 12.25 GMT.

The force said: "It is understood that a 33-year-old woman stole a high value of goods and left the scene, travelling on a mobility scooter along Weedon Street.

"The woman was reportedly driving erratically, and an officer followed in a police car, due to concern for the woman's own safety and that of other road users.

"The woman was detained, and the stolen items were recovered."
