Bodies of man and six-year-old girl found in house
A man and a child have been found dead in a house in West Lothian.
The bodies of a 36-year-old man and a six-year old girl were discovered in a property in Harburn Drive, West Calder.
Police Scotland responded to reports of concern for a person at about 16:00 on Monday and fire crews helped officers gain access.
The force said post-mortem examinations would take place in due course and the deaths were being treated as unexplained.
A police spokesperson said relatives are being supported by specialist officers.
West Lothian Council said the incident had "no connection" to the nearby Parkhead Primary School, which remains open as normal.
Ch Insp Elaine McArthur-Kerr said: "We understand this incident may be very upsetting and worrying for the people living in this community and would ask anyone with any concerns to speak to us.
"A police presence will remain in the area while we carry out investigations and anyone with any concerns, or information, can approach these officers."
Councillor Craig Meek said the incident had "sent shockwaves" throughout the community.
Mr Meek, who represents the Fauldhouse and the Breich Valley ward, said: "People are shocked and dismayed that this has occurred.
"It is early days. The investigation is ongoing with Police Scotland, so information is scarce, but certainly people are shocked by what has happened.
"My thoughts are very much with the family. It is really important as a community that we come together and support each other through this really difficult time."
Police are expected to provide further details about the case at a media briefing on Wednesday.
