A man has been arrested after a van crashed at a level crossing, causing rail disruption between Shrewsbury and Hereford.

Photos from the scene near Craven Arms showed a van on its side across the railway on Tuesday.

At the time, Network Rail said no trains were involved in the incident and the barriers at the crossing were raised at the time of the crash.

West Mercia Police said a 36-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen and had since been released under investigation.

Officers arrived at the scene on Tuesday to find a vehicle had hit the railings at the Stokesay signal box, a police spokeswoman said.

Disruption after the crash affected rail services between Chester, Crewe, Holyhead, Manchester Picadilly and Cardiff Central, and trains between Manchester Picadilly and Milford Haven and Swansea.
