The closure at Rouge Bouillon remains in place due to building concerns

An area in St Helier affected by a sinkhole could remain closed to traffic until April, the Government of Jersey has said.

Rouge Bouillon between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road was closed in December after a burst water main caused a sinkhole.

Closures remain in place due to ongoing building concerns at the junction which could be unsafe for pedestrians and residents.

The government said the private parties responsible for the affected buildings were "undertaking detailed investigations and repair work" and it was "expected to take some time".

Travel delays 'necessary'

It said: "Comprehensive assessments are under way to determine the extent of the damage and establish the necessary remedial actions.

"The road will only reopen once the buildings are stabilised and all risks of structural collapse have been mitigated.

"Current estimates suggest the closure could extend towards Easter."

The government said it understood the disruption to daily travel, but delays were "necessary to ensure the safety of all road users and residents".
