'Near misses' lead to new roundabout for key route
Work to build a larger roundabout on a key Berkshire route after drivers reported regular "near misses" is due to start in the new year.
Upgrades to the existing mini roundabout at the Holyport Road junction on the A308 in Berkshire will begin on 6 January.
The section of road, which connects Windsor and Maidenhead, has been identified as one of the areas with the highest number of incidents across the borough in the past five years, said the council.
Motorists using the road "said they regularly experienced near misses", according to the authority, and a serious crash at the end of 2023 left a cyclist hospitalised.
The new roundabout would improve road safety by accommodating both existing traffic and an expected increase in road users, said the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council.
Traffic lights were initially proposed for the Holyport Road and Windsor Road junction.
Following concerns from residents and motorists, the council decided to upgrade the existing mini roundabout instead, reducing congestion and making it easier for vehicles to turn safely.
Temporary three-way traffic lights would be in place while the work takes place between January and the end of July, said the authority.
