Funding boost for seawater pool repair project

A sea pool in Devon has been given a £550,000 government grant for repairs to save it from wave damage.

Shoalstone Seawater Pool in Brixham received money from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's Community Ownership Fund to go towards a £750,000 engineering project.

The pool's managers said the work would include the reconstruction of the north west corner and anchoring the base to rock below it after waves crashing against the structure caused cracks to appear.

Pool chair Jessica Stock said it was a "time to celebrate" after getting the funding for the project, which has also seen Torbay Council and Brixham Town Council donate a total of £120,000.

Ms Stock said: "For four years we have watched the waves coming over the side at Shoalstone Pool and every wave has made the cracks a little bit bigger.

"We have won this award because we were able to show that – from Santa Runs to Beer Festivals – the people of Brixham and Torbay have been tireless in their fundraising and support for the pool."
