Four people are setting off on a mission to deliver two retired ambulances from Jersey to Ukraine.

Rhys Perkins, John Howell, Bob de la Haye and Martin Pallot will be driving the vehicles filled with medical supplies and warm clothes.

The team, volunteering for charity Pick Ups for Peace, are taking the ambulances to France via ferry on Monday, before continuing their journey through Germany, Belgium and Poland and then Ukraine.

It was expected to take them four or five days, they said.

'Things are needed'

Rhys Perkins and Bob de la Haye took one ambulance out to the war-torn country last October.

Following that trip's success, Jersey Ambulance Service allocated two vehicles that were being retired from the fleet to the Pick Ups for Peace cause.

Bob de la Haye said: "We're taking anything we can to Ukraine, these are things that are needed; warm clothes, medical supplies etc… bits and pieces which we know will be of great use because there are a lot of homeless people in Ukraine, which I'm sure people have heard of.

"We're just doing our little bit to help."

The group of four have fundraised more than £13,000 for the trip, which has gone towards supplying the essential equipment that will be carried over in the ambulances.

Bob de la Haye added he hopes for a safe and easy passage: "There's a little bit of concern, obviously our wives are more concerned than we are.

"We hope we have a pleasant and safe journey all of the way through, nevertheless the end bit will be quite interesting because we do drive into Ukraine on our final day."
