A security alert in Londonderry, which saw a primary school close its doors, has ended and been declared a hoax.

Ebrington Primary School and Nursery made the precautionary decision after police received a report at 10:15 BST that a suspicious package had been found in Limavady Road.

No homes were evacuated and no roads were closed during the alert, and a cordon that was in place in the area of Heron Way with Nelson Drive has now been lifted.

Ch Insp Cherith Craig thanked the public and the school community for their "understanding and co-operation".

"We know the public safety operation caused disruption and inconvenience, in particular for Ebrington Primary School and Nursery who, as a precaution, made the decision to close for the day," she added.

Foyle College, which shares the same school site on the Limavady Road with the primary school, remained open.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
