A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment

A 19-year-old man is in hospital after being shot in the leg in Newtownards, County Down.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said that the incident was reported at 20:40 GMT in the Ballyreagh Way area on Tuesday evening.

Officers attended the scene with members of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) and the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

"There can be no justification for this type of violence," a spokesperson for the PSNI said.

"Those who are involved in this attack do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it."

"They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent."

The PSNI are appealing for anyone with footage or information to come forward.
