A cat that was stuck up a tree in a Devon garden for days has been rescued.

Firefighters had unsuccessfully tried to rescue Fizzy the feline from the tree in Totnes on Monday after she went missing on Sunday.

She was eventually rescued by tree surgeon Florian Speight, who estimated she was stuck at a height of between 12-15m (39.3ft-49.2ft).

Owner Nicky Gee, who located Fizzy in the tree on Monday after she heard meowing, said her pet had experienced "a bit of an ordeal" but was otherwise safe and well.

She said Fizzy was "surprisingly calm" despite having no sleep or food for days

Ms Gee said she called the RSPCA and a number of tree surgeons to rescue the cat after firefighters had no luck.

Despite having no sleep or food for days, she said she was "surprisingly calm".

Mr Speight said it was not a straightforward climb up the tree as it was a multi-stemmed thuja tree with skinny branches, half of which were dead.

"We have given the cat potentially seven more years of its life because I don't think it was going to last much longer up there in this cold weather," he said.

"It was a pleasure to bring her down and get her safe."

Nicky Gee said Fizzy "acted like a sweetheart" after being rescued from the tree

Ms Gee said Fizzy was tired when she came down but was now doing well.

"I was anticipating she was going to be scratchy," she said.

"They can be scared in that scenario, and she acted like a sweetheart.

"She has had something to eat, something to drink and is sitting on the sofa as if nothing has happened."
