Man caught in the act in early morning burglary
A burglar who was caught in the act in the early hours of the morning by one of his victims has been jailed.
Andrew Jenkins, 44, of St Paul's Road, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, broke into a flat in the city's centre at about 03:15 BST on 13 October.
The victim woke up and confronted the thief, who claimed to be looking for a friend and tried to leave despite having items from the property tucked into his jacket.
Jenkins pleaded guilty to burglary, attempted burglary and theft at Peterborough Crown Court on Tuesday and was jailed for two years and four months.
His victim found he was carrying items from the flat, including an old phone, a wallet containing cash and the keys to a Mercedes car, according to Cambridgeshire Police.
Jenkins eventually made off but left a vape at the scene, from which forensic officers recovered a DNA profile.
He was also caught on CCTV before the burglary trying the back door of another flat, getting into a Mini Cooper in the car park and taking shopping from its boot, as well as attempting to break into a Jaguar XF.
PC Luke Blakey said: "Burglary is a force priority, and we will continue doing everything we can do to help bring offenders to justice."
