Flood-hit football club launches fundraising bid
A football club has appealed for help to repair and rebuild its clubhouse after it was damaged by floodwater on New Year's Day.
Battyeford Sporting Club in Mirfield, which runs 37 football teams for children and young people, is aiming to raise £100,000.
A club spokesperson said previous repair works after flooding had been covered by insurance but the organisation was now unable to get the building insured.
They said members now needed "help to bring the club back up to a good standard for the kids that play in our teams".
Heavy rain led to flooding and disruption across Yorkshire on New Year's Day.
The club's site on Huddersfield Road was one of the properties inundated with floodwater, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
A spokesperson said that "in the short term we might be back open again", but that money was needed to upgrade the flood defences.
"We are grateful for the immediate help we received the day after the event to clean up the car park and shovel out the dirt and debris from the clubhouse," the spokesperson said.
"After events such as the one on New Year's Day, we have to find the funds ourselves."
