E-bikes and motorised scooter seized in crackdown

Ten adapted e-bikes and a motorised scooter "terrorising" people as they were being illegally ridden on roads have been seized by police.

Northumbria Police said a team dedicated to tackling motorbike disorder carried out a day of action in Sunderland city centre.

Six riders were spoken to while four "fled on foot", according to the force.

E-bikes can only have motors that assist riders on speeds of up to 15.5mph, national rules state.

Bikes with faster motors must be classed as motor vehicles, such as motorcycles or mopeds, and riders need a licence to use them.

The force described the operation as a "huge success", adding people "shouldn't have to worry about modified bikes, illegally being ridden and terrorising their neighbourhoods".
