Woman found dead in house fire

A woman in her 70s has died in a house fire.

The blaze broke out on Drysdale Crescent in Brunswick Village, Newcastle, shortly before 10:00 BST on Wednesday.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service crew found the woman inside the building but despite efforts to save her she died at the scene.

Det Ch Insp Jason Henry from Northumbria Police said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."

He said that at this stage police do not believe anyone else was involved in the fire or the woman's death.
