Mechanical horse ride unveiled for children

A mechanical horse that simulates real riding is due to be unveiled for children with disabilities to use.
Installed by Venture Riding for the Disabled Association based in Hannington, Northamptonshire, the custom-built simulator is part of the charity's efforts to expand access to riding.
The new simulator will be officially opened on Saturday and champion rider Piggy March will attend the ceremony.
Trustee Kevin Hives said: "The ride gives the impression of [horses] walking and cantering, which means we can reach more children that have physical and mental disabilities."
March, who is based in Maidwell in the county, has won eventing equestrian medals for Team GB at multiple world and European championships.

Built over five months, the simulator mirrors the movement of a live horse and is paired with an immersive screen showing virtual environments, including forests, beaches and dressage arenas.
As the horse moves, the screen and scenery respond in sync.
The design features include a tail made from real horse hair, a metallic body, a plastic head, and faux leather coverings.
Volunteers have received specialist training in using a mechanical hoist and performing safe transfers onto the simulator.
Mr Hives added: "[The charity] supports around 110 children from across the region and people come from all over because there's nothing that offers anything like this.
"It's a community and we want to extend that hub."
