Drivers in East Renfrewshire were caught in 10-mile long morning tailbacks on the M77 after overnight roadworks overran.

Traffic Scotland reported delays of more than an hour due to the temporary closure of the northbound carriageway at Junction 5, Maidenhill.

On social media, drivers reported hundreds of cars at a standstill and vehicles reversing down slip roads to avoid the delay.

The road reopened at about 08:15 but the tailback remained large back to Fenwick until after 09:00, according to the transport body.

Meanwhile, drivers using the M74 near Newton in Glasgow also endured disruption, after a multi-vehicle crash caused the southbound carriageway to be restricted.
