Plan for 33-storey student block in city centre

A new 33-storey student accommodation block could be built in a city centre if plans are approved.

Developers Vita Group want to build on a vacant plot at the corner of Manchester's Hulme Street and Medlock Street, in the city's First Street district.

Designs submitted to Manchester City Council show the new building would feature 861 rooms if approved, comprising four different sizes, and social spaces and three gyms.

The proposal includes a number of safety measures including a 24-hour security presence and CCTV.

The studio-style rooms would each include a kitchenette with fridge, hob and a microwave oven, an en-suite bathroom and a study desk, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Larger rooms would also feature a washing machine/dryer and a living room space with a sofa.

Tim Groom Architects has incorporated group study rooms and social spaces.

The proposed building is a short commute from both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester and is situated in the city's First Street district.

The neighbourhood, designated as a regeneration area by Manchester City Council has a mix of office and leisure spaces, including a cinema, theatre and the art gallery, HOME.

Initial plans put forward by the developer featured 750 rooms, but an updated version shows an additional 119 beds.

The planning application currently has zero comments or objections.
