A dual carriageway was blocked for about seven hours after a lorry carrying a 29-tonne load of stone overturned.

Police were called to the A12 southbound near the Copdock Interchange, near Ipswich, after the incident at 03:27 GMT.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital for further treatment, an ambulance spokesperson said.

Suffolk Police said the road had been reopened following recovery of the lorry and the carriageway was reopened at 10:55.

The southbound carriageway had been closed between junction 33 and junction 32b for "complex recovery and clear up works," National Highways said.

Traffic was diverted via the A1214 northbound, then along the B1113 through Washbrook and back on to the A12 southbound at junction 32b.

The HGV was carrying rubble and its container had detached from the lorry cab, the police said.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene and a spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the driver removed themselves safely from the vehicle.

A separate collision on the A14 westbound carriageway between junction 55 for the Copdock Interchange and junction 54 for Sproughton nearby also happened at about 09:19.

It led to one lane being closed, causing further delays for drivers. However, all lanes were back open an hour later.
