Then & Now photos show changing face of the city

A new exhibition is re-creating archive photos to show how Lincoln's landmarks and buildings have changed over the past century.

Then & Now runs at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life until 31 August.

Visitors can see dozens of older photos of buildings and locations – such as Lincoln Cathedral and Steep Hill – next to photos of the same scenes taken this year.

Sarah Bone, from the county council, said: "It was fascinating to delve through Lincolnshire's archives, find these incredible pictures and walk in the footsteps of the photographers who captured them more than 100 ago. Some pictures were definitely easier to re-create than others!"

Organisers hope the exhibition will help visitors see local landmarks in a new light.

Ms Bone said: "Every one of these pictures is a precious time capsule, but my favourite is probably the view of Lincoln Cathedral taken from the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

"It's so interesting to compare this view before many of the houses on Burton Road were built – and we had to climb on the museum roof to capture it!"

There are also objects in the exhibition, including a pair of primitive ice skates used on Brayford Pool.

The photographs and objects are accompanied by a short film produced by the Lincolnshire Film Archive, containing footage from 1930s Lincoln.
