The remains of two dogs have been found in a lay-by, the RSPCA says, confirming an investigation is under way.

A member of the public found the dachshund and cavalier dumped off Mosley Road in Wolverhampton - one in a bag hanging from a fence, the other left on some grass.

Both dogs were microchipped but the information was not up to date, the animal rescue charity said.

"It's incredibly sad that these dogs were dumped in this way and suspicious that their remains have been found in the location," RSPCA officer Katey Freckelton said of the find, made earlier this month.

"They were discovered on 16 April and taken straight to a vet, although the person who found them thinks they may have been there for around a week before they were found," the officer said.

"If anyone has any information about where these dogs may have come from or who is responsible for dumping them here, please call our appeal line..."
