Confusion as park keeps getting wrapped in plastic

A children's play park keeps getting wrapped in plastic, leaving a council mystified.

Workington Town Council pleaded with the culprits to stop the "strange behaviour" at the Cusack Crescent play area, in Cumbria.

It said it had happened before and staff had just removed the plastic each time.

However, when officials came to take the plastic down on Monday, "large heavy slabs and a fencing weight" fell from the top of the equipment, narrowly missing a staff member.

"This could have been a small child and it may not have missed," a Facebook post from the town council on Tuesday read.

"Please stop this strange behaviour."

Chief officer Emma Chapman said it had happened three to four times over the last few years.

She said the council originally thought it had been vandals, as they had experienced recent issues of vandalism at other play areas.

Moorclose Park, which opened in the area just before Christmas, recently had the chains of its swings cut.

Following the Facebook post, members of the community suggested it could be a homeless person setting up shelter.

The town council said it was addressing the issue with Cumberland Council's homeless team, to see if they could investigate the matter.
