Family demanded charity drop Captain Tom's name
The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore demanded the charity set up in his honour stopped using his name, it has emerged.
The Captain Tom Foundation was named after the fundraiser from Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.
His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband Colin later become directors, but were disqualified by the Charity Commission.
A spokesperson for the charity said it had "acceded to the family's demand" and applied to change its name to The 1189808 Foundation, despite the couple's "failure to rectify matters by returning the funds properly due to it".
The full statement read: "Notwithstanding the Charity Commission's findings against the Ingram-Moores, as well as their failure to rectify matters by returning the funds properly due to it, The Captain Tom Foundation considers it inappropriate to stand in the way of the family's wish regarding the use of the late Sir Captain Tom's name.
"The Foundation has therefore acceded to the family's demand that it removes Captain Tom's name from its title."
During the first Covid-19 lockdown Capt Sir Tom walked up and down his driveway to raise £38.9m for NHS Charities Together.
The Captain Tom Foundation was registered as a grant-making charity two months after his walk began and Mr and Mrs Ingram-Moore became directors the day before he died, aged 100, in February 2021.
The Charity Commission launched a statutory inquiry to determine if the couple had benefited privately at the charity's expense.
In November it said the couple had damaged public trust in charities by refusing to donate to the Foundation any of the £1.4m a private family company received from his book deal.
David Holdsworth, chief executive of the Charity Commission, said there were repeated instances of a "blurring of boundaries between private and charitable interests" and that Hannah and Colin Ingram-Moore benefited significantly.
Capt Sir Tom's family have been approached for comment but previously said they had been treated "unfairly and unjustly".
