Former officer charged over fatal crash

A former officer is due in court over a crash that killed a pedestrian and injured another nearly four years ago.

Michael Cooper, formerly a detective chief inspector at Derbyshire Police, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

It comes after a crash in Egginton Road in Etwall, Derbyshire, which killed 50-year-old James Bane and injured a female pedestrian on 28 September 2021.

Mr Cooper, 54, is due at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

It follows an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which filed evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which authorised the charges.
