A woman aged in her 80s has died after she was struck by an e-bike, with the rider then leaving the scene.

It happened in Burdon Road in Sunderland, near the junction with Lidcombe Close, shortly before 13:00 BST on Friday and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The woman was crossing the road when she was struck by a black Sur-Ron bike travelling north.

An 18-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail pending further inquiries.

Sections of Burdon Road and Lidcombe Close were closed for about four hours.

Sgt Andrew Ferguson, of Northumbria Police, said it was a "devastating incident" and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"We know this is quite a busy stretch of road, with lots of people and vehicles in the area at the time, so please get in touch if you saw anything," he said.

Police said the vehicle involved had been recovered and that the woman's next of kin were being supported.
