A 68-year-old man has been arrested after a car was shot at in East Yorkshire.

Armed police were called to Westfield Road near Cottingham at about 21:10 GMT on Wednesday.

A car with five occupants aged between 16 and 21 pulled up to check directions when a man came out of a property and is believed to have fired a shot at the vehicle, Humberside Police said.

Det Ch Insp Ben Robinson said: "The occupants of the car sought safety nearby and armed officers were immediately deployed to the area and on arrival further shots were heard."

Mr Robinson said nobody was injured in the incident.

"However, I completely understand an incident of this nature will alarm local residents, and our neighbourhood policing team will be out and about in the area and across Cottingham providing reassurance. If you do have any concerns please do speak to them," he added.

"Officers remain at the scene whilst we explore all lines of enquiry including conducting searches to understand what weapon may have been involved as well as the circumstances surrounding the incident."

Roads remain closed around the area and investigators are appealing for information and any video footage.
