Funding has been secured to repair a footbridge which has been unusable since collapsing in 2019 due to heavy rain.

The National Trust said the Tumbling Bay Weir bridge in Guildford would be repaired after its engineers designed a replacement structure.

The trust said they were "delighted" to have secured funding to replace both the weir and bridge but the timing could change.

A charity spokesperson said it was their "hope to be able to deliver the replacement works over the summer of 2026" but there was an "element of risk to this date" as there were "several factors to work through".

Water levels meant there was a "very narrow" three-month window in which to complete the works, they said.

The trust said this year would be spent working to ensure any flood risks were mitigated, alongside tendering for the construction phase of the project.

Following discussions with Guildford Borough Council the trust assumed responsibility for repairing the bridge in November 2023.

Alongside this project, the trust has been resurfacing and strengthening the towpath between the railway bridge opposite Dapdune Wharf to Walnut Bridge.
