Plans to spend nearly £85m on three projects aimed at transforming a Staffordshire town centre have been approved.

The schemes in Newcastle-under-Lyme will deliver about 300 flats along with amenities for residents and commercial space.

The Astley Place project includes 42 apartments, 11,148 sq ft of commercial space and a 3,046 sq ft music venue.

Midway features 111 apartments and more than 4,500 sq ft of shared facilities including a gym and mini-cinema, while Ryecroft would contain 132 apartments and studios.

Council chiefs plan to pay for building work through short-term borrowing over two or three years.

But this money, plus interest, will be recouped by selling the sites to developer Capital&Centric, once they have been completed.

The council also hopes to secure grant funding from Homes England.

Planning permission for the three schemes has yet to be granted.

The Astley Place and Midway developments will involve keeping much of the existing buildings.
