Plans to repair dilapidated listed cemetery chapel
Plans to repair a cemetery's Grade II listed chapel, which is at risk of collapse, are set to be approved.
The 1856 Anglican building is part of Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland and has been dangerously dilapidated for years.
Sunderland City Council announced plans to repair the site in February 2023 and its planning committee has been recommended to approve the authority's application when it meets on 6 January.
Issues identified include a leaning spirelet, the chapel roof being "in the process of slowly collapsing into the nave", as well as parts of the building "breaking apart".
Work would include repairs to the structure, a new roof and drainage system to make the building watertight and ready for "further development", the council said.
Planning documents seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service said the chapel - inside Sunderland's biggest cemetery - was an "impressive example of its type", built to designs of local architect Thomas Moore.
Another chapel within the cemetery grounds, known as Central Chapel, was demolished after a fire in the late 1990s.
