Work starts on Calne High Street one-way scheme

A pedestrianised high street in Wiltshire is to be opened up to cars in one direction in a bid to improve traffic flow.

Wiltshire Council is starting work to reopen Calne High Street for vehicles travelling south from Wood Street to Curzon Street.

The 18-month trial will reverse a road closure which has been in place since 1968.

Afterwards, Wiltshire Council will make a decision on whether to make the scheme permanent or revert to pedestrian-only use.

The council will tarmac the centre of the street, and place temporary barriers on either side of the road to protect pedestrians.

Tree planters on the High Street will be relocated elsewhere in the town.

Cabinet member for highways, councillor Nick Holder said: "We want to improve the air quality in Calne and also help to relieve some of the traffic issues in the town, which is why we're trialling the opening of High Street to traffic, one way from north to south.

"As outlined in our Business Plan, we are committed to creating well-connected communities and taking responsibility for the environment."
