A police car was hit by a vehicle as it attended the scene of an earlier crash in County Durham.

Officers were called to the A19 near Castle Eden just before 05:00 GMT after an Audi struck a lamp-post.

A short time later a Toyota then crashed into the stationary police car, as well as another lamp-post.

The driver of the Audi suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. No one was hurt in the second incident.

Both motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

Durham Police has appealed for anyone who may have witnessed either incident to come forward.

The southbound carriageway of the A19 remains closed but was expected to reopen later on Sunday.
