Speeding driver jailed over pedestrian's death

A man who hit and killed a pedestrian while driving at "excessive speeds" in a residential area has been jailed.
Gyokay Gelen struck a man as he crossed St Neots Road in Eaton Socon, Cambridgeshire at about 21:00 BST on 19 April 2023.
The 28-year-old, of Cambridge Street, St. Neots, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving at Peterborough Crown Court and was jailed for three years and six months.
Jonathan Mills, 40, of Eaton Socon died at the scene and police said Gelen could have avoided hitting him had he been obeying the 30mph (48km/h) limit.
Det Con Paddy Reeve of Cambridgeshire Police said: "Gelen chose to drive his car at excessive speeds through a residential area.
"This tragic case should serve as a reminder to the public to drive at an appropriate speed for the road.
"Gelen's dangerous driving has ultimately cost an innocent pedestrian his life.
"Our thoughts are with Mr Mills's family at this time, and we hope this sentence gives them a little bit of closure."
Gelen was also banned from driving for five years and nine months.
