A council in Warwickshire has started to spray paint dog mess in public areas and parks in an effort to highlight the problem and get owners to dispose of waste responsibly.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has launched a campaign to let dog owners know "any bin will do" when it comes to getting rid of dog poo, rather than needing to find specific dog waste bins.

Cllr Tony Venson said: "It is only a small number of irresponsible dog owners who decide not to clean up behind their dogs.

"We want them to realise just what they are leaving behind in their community by visually highlighting it to them on the streets."

Recently, the council carried out spot checks in public spaces and parks around Nuneaton.

Louisa Cullen is the Animal Welfare Officer for the borough and said: "We went to three different sites and there was a total of 190 dog fouls that weren't picked up.

"I think the dog fouling problem is quite a lot larger than people might actually think, but it didn't surprise me if I'm honest."
