A teenager has been given a youth referral order after he was spotted carrying a baton and "Rambo" style knife, police say.

The 16-year-old was arrested in Wisbech on 27 February after shopping centre security officers reported two people who might have had weapons.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found with a man and woman in a gated-off area next to the White Lion Hotel.

Cambridgeshire Police said on 29 April the teenager was sentenced to an eight-month youth referral order – a type of community sentence for first-time young offenders.

Officers found the boy based on the descriptions given by security.

As he was about to be searched, he took his coat off and handed it to a woman.

Officers said they spotted a police-style baton sticking out of the inside pocket, as well as a knife.

He was charged with being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and being in possession of a bladed article in a public place, both of which he admitted in court, police said.

PC Ryan Windass said: "This was a great spot by security officers who acted on their instincts and reported their concerns to us straight away.

"We were able to intervene before the weapons could be used and potentially cause serious harm to someone."
