An 18-year-old man has died after a car left the road and entered a waste water facility.

Emergency services found a white Volkswagen Golf partially submerged in a pit at a water treatment facility after it reportedly came off Wheldon Road in Castleford at about 06:19 GMT on Sunday.

The 18-year-old, who was from the Wakefield area, was found a few yards away from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, West Yorkshire Police said.

Officers found a man and woman both aged 21, inside the vehicle who were taken to hospital for further treatment. They have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers have asked anyone who witnessed the vehicle travelling along Wheldon Road from the direction of Airedale immediately beforehand to get in touch.
