Extra policing patrols have been drafted in after a spate of what officers branded "serious" attacks on trains.
British Transport Police said six incidents had taken place at Cambridge North railway station since 18 January.
The BBC understands catapults have been used in the attacks, which left several trains with smashed windows.
Temporary Det Insp Charlotte Collins said those responsible could face a "significant custodial sentence".
Rail services have been delayed as a result of the incidents, with the latest occurring on Sunday.
Police have appealed for witnesses to support their investigation and said no-one had been injured.
Det Insp Collins warned: "These are very serious incidents of endangering safety on the railway.
"Passengers will see an increased police presence in the area and we are working with the rail industry to tackle this issue."
