Digger 'hits traffic light' and crashes into post office

The machine hit a traffic light before colliding with the Post Office on Platt Street in Wigan, a neighbouring business said.

A post office worker has said she was "shocked" when she arrived at work this morning to find a digger had crashed into the building.

Ebonny said, the digger hit and knocked down a traffic light before hitting the business on Platt Street in Wigan.

"I was shocked initially, it's not what you expect to see first thing in the morning," she said.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and dangerous driving, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

The witness said the incident initially caused long delays due to the road being blocked and the damage to the traffic light but said traffic had returned to normal.

Greater Manchester Police said the force received a report of a road traffic collision on Walthew Lane in Platt Bridge, Wigan involving a digger at 09:30 GMT.

A scene remains in place whilst enquiries continue but the road has reopened anyone with information has been asked to contact police.
