The States of Guernsey is warning islanders about a social media scam posing as a news article about income tax rules.

Guernsey Police said it had received reports of a scam running on Facebook which encouraged islanders to enter personal details in exchange for income.

The States said a company called Modmount Ltd would ask users to open an account for an "initial investment" payment and "once an account was opened $250 was taken as payment".

It added the scammer was also calling victims on the phone to "chase them up for the payment", with the calls coming from at least three different numbers.

The States advised social media users to be "suspicious" about any online deals that seemed to good to be true.

It added: "If you receive any unexpected phone calls, especially from numbers you do not recognise, pressuring you into signing up for a scheme then you should hang up.

It said victims should call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or Guernsey Police on 222222.
