Roadworks moved so businesses 'feel the benefit'

A planned road closure for a £9m regeneration project has been brought forward so businesses can "start to feel the benefit".

Clare Street in Bridgwater, Somerset, is to close to vehicles for up to five months for the town's Celebration Mile project.

The scheme aims to make the route between Bridgwater Railway Station and the docks pedestrian-only, and has led to months of roadworks.

Local businesses have previously told the BBC the lack of trade during the previous works has led to them to use personal funds to pay rent.

The work was scheduled to start in the spring before the move but the council has brought it forward to minimise summer disruption for traders, locals and tourists.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council's lead member for economic development, said: "We want to get this work completed as quickly as possible."

People on foot will still have access to the road, he said, adding extra signs will be put up saying businesses are open.
