A family-run bakery chain has closed after 120 years in business with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

Oddie's, which was based in Nelson, Lancashire, but had branches across the east of the county including Burnley and Colne, was established in 1905 and was run by the same family.

The firm said the Covid pandemic and "economic slowdown" had "a profound impact on the business' ability to operate at levels we were accustomed to".

They had sought a rescue deal late last year, but said a potential sale "fell through after extensive negotiations".

'Truly saddened'

In a statement the family said they were "truly saddened" to confirm the closures.

They blamed escalating costs "not least though the energy crisis which has depleted much of the companies reserves".

"This has put a heavy strain on the company's finances and ultimately the cost to reinvest and recover," they said.

The statement added: "We do thank all the loyal Oddie's customers over the last 120 years and place on record our thanks to staff who have worked for the business, especially for their efforts and continued commitment since the initial consultation announcement.

"The business is supporting staff in finding suitable alternative employment and continues in discussions with parties who have interest in the business."
