New 20mph limit to be introduced in 35 streets

New 20mph speed limits are set to be introduced in two parts of Leicester.
Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, has approved plans to impose the new limit in 30 streets around the Home Farm area of Beaumont Leys and five further streets near Saffron Lane.
Leicester City Council says it hopes the reduced limits will cut the number of accidents and encourage people to cycle and walk instead of drive.
The council canvassed the views of people who live in the 1,805 homes along the streets set to be affected and only 99 responded, 67 of whom were in favour.
The roads in the Saffron Lane area set to receive new 20mph limits are Hawkins Road, Old Saffron Lane, Pentland Close, Maris Lane and part of Saffron Lane itself from numbers 105 to 147.
The roads in the Home Farm area which will become 20mph are:
- Acer Close
- Austwick Close
- Aysgarth Road
- Bishopdale Road
- Butterwick Drive
- Churchward Avenue
- Collett Road
- Cross Hedge Close
- Dunire Close
- Eskdale Road
- Farrier Lane
- Fowler Close
- Glaisdale Close
- Grassington Close
- Gresley Close

Three new speed cushions will be constructed in Butterwick Drive alongside the existing traffic calming measure when the new speed limit is introduced.
