The Isle of Wight's chain ferry will halt crossings for 48 hours due to a battery fault.

Floating Bridge 6, which crosses the River Medina between Cowes and East Cowes, is out of action after Marine Electricians identified the issue.

Bridge operator, Isle of Wight Council, said the ferry - which has been plagued with breakdowns since its first launch - needed four new batteries.

The authority released a statement explaining: "We hope to be returning to full service in the next 48 hours."

A launch service for pedestrians and cyclists is in operation while the bridge is not running.

In March, the council decided the chain ferry, which has been running since 2017, would be replaced.

The authority has apologised for "any inconvenience caused".
